OBITUARIES
Andrew Shea, photographer and visual artist, dead at 32
Andrew F. Shea, 32, died from complications associated with AIDS on March 27 in San Francisco. The artist and dancer was born in and spent most of his life in the Boston area, residing in Cleveland from late 1989 to mid 1991, before moving to San Francisco.
Over several summers he was part of the annual Gayla Men's Conference in Ferry Beach, near Saco, Maine. His move to Cleveland was encouraged by the many gay men from this area who attend the week-long conference and enjoyed his company.
During his relatively short stay in Ohio, Shea continued his photographic art career, attending CSU and displaying his work at various locations including Truffles Pastries, It's It Deli, and Fiori Gallery in Cleveland; Wonderful Things Gallery in Shaker Heights; the C'est Si Bon Restaurant in Akron; and the performances of "Breaking Through" at the Near West Theater. He donated work that was auctioned at the Center Garden Party and participated in the CSU Uncensored Art Show; one of his photographs made it to the semifinalist stage of the 1990 May Show.
He also served as gallery curator for several months at the Chronicle offices when the space was suited to hanging art work. Each month a different local gay or lesbian artist was featured.
Shea was always a restless spirit who reveled in the sophistication of a major gay city. By 1991 he needed to treat himself to the ultimate gay ghetto and left for San Francisco in the summer with some friends. He found what he was looking for there, immersing himself in the fast life during the short time before his body started to succumb. For those who knew him, his last days were classic Andy: staying in control up until the end, holding court, complaining and camping with dozens of San Francisco friends and acquaintances who came to his bedside. He died peacefully after relatively few hospital stays fighting debilitating illnesses.
Shea made a strong impression on everyone he met, and was considered "a true original." His artistic flair was frequently cutting edge or controversial, and always innovative. He was a forthright, honest and genuinely caring person who had a range of
moods from brooding artist to exuberant salesman. His flair for fashion and decoration were admired and envied, as were his drag outfits, persona and performance ability.
His formal artistic schooling was at the Art Institute of Boston where he frequently won student awards and scholarships. From an early age, overcoming a severe leg burn, he developed into a strong dancer, performing with local amateur companies.
He is survived by two sisters and two brothers and their families, his former lover, Kevin Beaney, plus a wealth of friends and admirers stretching from Maine to California. A memorial service will be held in May in Cleveland. Following his wishes, his ashes will be spread at Ferry Beach during this year's Gayla conference. Donations can be made in his name to Project Open Hand, 2720 17th St, San Francisco, CA 94110, or to any AIDS service organization.
Ryan Fred Rhinehart, aka The Pineapple Princess
Ryan "Pineapple" Rhinehart died peacefully on February 28, 1993 and a memorial tribute was held March 22 in Seattle, Washington. He was 31 years old. Ryan will be missed by hundreds for his generous heart, his bright spirit, his mischievous smile, his quick wink, his sly humor, his witty performances whether on or off stage, his devotion to AIDS awareness and education in the Asian community, and his radiant tolerance.
Ryan is survived by his mother Helen, his sisters, brother, nieces, nephews and hundreds of friends as surrogate family from all over the country.
Ryan was probably born in Seoul, Korea, but was reborn to his adoptive family in Tacoma, Washington when he was about 21⁄2 years old.
He found his gay life when he was about 16 and left Tacoma for San Francisco shortly thereafter. He was a nomad from then on, not a stranger but a visitor in our midst, adopting many families, inventing many roles, taking several stage names, keeping each life separate and private, rarely letting anyone getting close, leaving and returning many times. He roamed from Seattle to New York, from Miami to Honolulu and a
